In another show of (inadvertent) support, three American physicists published a paper in the journal Physical Review Letters on November 9 – two days after Verlinde’s arXiv upload – suggesting that the acceleration of stars orbiting a galaxy’s centre could be predicted by normal (technically, baryonic) matter alone. This conclusion contests one of the fundamental motivations for dark matter, that it influences the acceleration, too.
In June 2011, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) awarded Verlinde the Spinoza Prize , the highest award available to Dutch scientists including a million euro grant for future research. The committee cited his work on the Verlinde formula, the Witten–Dijkgraaf–Verlinde–Verlinde equations, the Cardy-Verlinde formula and entropic gravity as the major achievements leading to the award.

Ferdinand also says (chapter xi) that before he was declared admiral, his father used to sign himself "Columbus de Terra rubra," that is to say, Columbus of Terrarossa , a village or hamlet near Genoa . In another passage, Ferdinand says that his father went to Lisbon and taught his brother Bartholomew to construct sea charts, globes and nautical instruments; and sent this brother to England to make proposals to Henry VII of his desired voyage. Finally, Ferdinand says incidentally (chapter lxxii) that Christopher's brother, Bartholomew Columbus named the new settlement Santo Domingo in memory of their father, Domenico .
